As a bookend to our blog reports about The Gates, we thought we would toss out some stats, random observations, and other minutiae about The Gates.
- Over 1 million people visited The Gates. The largest crowds seemed to congregate near Central Park South. We encountered very few people when we ventured to other areas of the park like the Upper West Side.
- Museum attendance doubled at all major NY museums during the gates. The Metropolitan Museum of Art reported that there were 60,000 visitors the first weekend of The Gates, double the normal attendance figures. It was wall to wall people (picture from MoMA), but all of the major museums that we visited seemed to handle the crowds with ease.
- There were few incidences of vandalism and graffiti. In the "not the sharpest knife in the drawer department", three NJ men were cited for being in the park past 1:00 am on Saturday. Later, police found that someone had scrawled their names on one of the gates. It didn't take CSI NY to figure this one out...the cops quickly matched the names to the citations that were previously issued. The men have been summoned to appear in court.
- An army of people will begin dismantling The Gates on Monday. All materials from The Gates will be recycled.
- No doubt that this was a boost to NY's economy...wonder what the expense will be for the massive police presence required to protect The Gates??
- Christo and Jeanne-Claude funded the entire $21M project out of their own pockets. They would never think about accepting or soliciting corporate sponsorship. Based on the color scheme of The Gates, Home Depot would have been a natural sponsor. Maybe Home Depot will want to use our picture in a future ad campaign!
